This project reinterprets the principles of vernacular German post-and-beam construction, exploring the adaptation of traditional building methods to a sleek contemporary context.
The dark facade mimics the traditional infilled facade of the German vernacular, acting as a veil for the inhabitants inside, where light comes in, but little light travels out. This serves to provide privacy, which was important for the clients when introducing a separate guest house.
Concerned about both interior and exterior living, the inhabitants have plenty of living spaces to suit the seasons, including a boat shed for summer living.
Gables and butterfly roofs ensure the inhabitants have the best views possible, whilst also providing plenty of daylighting throughout the year. In conjunction with the practicality of the roof form, services and structure are similarly celebrated.
