A sustainable 5-storey library in Dunedin, Climate Zone 5.
The design is informed by several sustainability strategies, such as water collection and reuse, natural ventilation, and solar analysis. Thermal comfort is ensured through the use of S/V ratio, shaft double skin facade, underfloor heating, and triple glazing. High ceiling heights, an atrium, and glazed roof ensure adequate daylight penetration, while louvres and terracotta facade provide solar shading.
A proposed concrete structure affords longevity and the ability to be retrofitted in the future. This will reduce the overall carbon effect by extending the building's lifespan. A legally binding document is proposed to prevent the destruction of the building and require adaptive reuse.
